Connections Through Time
Verse 1
A sepia photograph in the back of a drawer,
Face frozen in time, proudly going off to war,
Chicken-scratch notes in the family bible,
Births, deaths and weddings, a history reliable,
Clues to the past,
Traces to grasp,
Use them to reach back, reach back and find,
The connections that bind us, ‘cross the great sweep of time
Chorus
They reach across time,
Links in the chain,
Each generation,
Sharing a name,
Reach back to learn from them,
Lessons hard won,
The sum of their stories,
Shape who you become
Verse 2
The bequests from the past, are here with you now,
In the line of your jaw, the set of your brow,
In the heart of your nature, the strength of your will,
The essence of ancestors here with you still,
Birth-right passed on,
From forebears long gone,
But part of your legacy, unchangeable sign,
Of the connections that bind us, ‘cross the great sweep of time
Chorus
Verse 3
What will you pass on, to those who come next,
Who knows how the currents of time will connect,
Only with passage of years will you see,
Just how far the fruit will fall from the tree,
But there at the heart,
The immutable part,
Lifeblood of your being carried on down the line,
By the connections that bind us ‘cross the great sweep of time
Chorus
