Not One Without the Other

SONG LYRICS

I sit down by the window
I see the runway stretch
I take in all the feelings
As I think of what comes next

The space is very crowded
I’ve not been here before
It’s new and overwhelming
Will I find what I search for?

Though I know it’s not easy
My heart is filled with hope
Because I know

You’re linked to me
I’m linked to you
Tell me what you’ve been through.
You are me
And I am you
That’s why I need to find you

To feel whole I’ll need your help on this journey.
I need your love to guide me now
I don’t know where to go.
We’re not one without the other.

My stomach gets uneasy
As the plane goes up and down
I don’t know what I’m facing
And my thoughts begin to drown

I’m anxiously awaiting
Just want to see your face
Can’t help but get the feeling
This is all a wild goose chase

Just as I start doubting
I question what it’s worth
‘Til I remember

You’re linked to me
I’m linked to you
Tell me what you’ve been through.
You are me
And I am you
That’s why I need to find you

To feel whole I’ll need your help on this journey.
I need your love to guide me now
I don’t know where to go.
We’re not one without the other.

At last when the plane landed
I see you standing there
This challenge then was worth it
For this time we get to share

You tell me all your stories
And I feel so close to you
My eyes have now been opened
To this life you’ve led me to

We’ve made this new connection
You’ll lead me to make more
If we continue

You’re linked to me
I’m linked to you
Tell me what you’ve been through.
You are me
And I am you
That’s why I had to find you

To feel whole I’ll need your help on this journey.
I need your love to guide me now
I now know who I am
We’re not one without the other

DESCRIPTION
Through this song we tried to capture the experience of discovering family members through family history. The experience of traveling on an airplane to meet a long-lost family member embodies the emotions that beginners feel as they struggle to navigate through the world of family history as well as the joy they feel when they find someone. My wife, Julia, and I wrote this song together.
