Song for My Grandmother (Song of Joy)

SONG LYRICS

A Song of Joy (Song for my Grandmother)

I went home for Christmas to the town of my birth
Traveled to see my old grandma, who loved me
Like the earth loves the sun, yes she did, she loved this boy

Well, I went to the street and shopping malls
And sat down with my guitar
I started to play and began to sing
I even managed a smile, and I sang a song of Joy
The spirit of freedom from a man of love
And I sang all my tears away

Along came a businessman,
Satchel and a suit
He listened with a critical ear
And tossed a dollar or two, and I sang a song of Joy
The spirit of freedom from a man of the world
And I sang his indifference away.

Along came a young man,
dungarees and a beard.
He watched with a cynical smile
And passed a pamphlet or two, and I sang a song of Joy
The spirit of freedom from a man of truth
And I sang all his anger away

Along came an old grandma
Spectacles and a cane.
She needed to rest, but she knew the song
I even got her to sing along, and we sang a song of Joy
The spirit of freedom from God above
And I sang all those years away.

Along came some children
All smiles and shouts.
They laughed and clapped and danced around
The heavens rang with their bright sound, and we sang a song of Joy
The spirit of freedom from a man of hope
And we sang from the innocence of love

I went home for Christmas to the town of my birth
Traveled to see my old grandma, who loved me
Like the sky loves the sea, yes she did, she loved this boy
